After the Super Bowl, could a national political convention be in Arlington’s future?

The Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau confirmed Tuesday that the Democratic National Committee briefly considered Arlington as a location for its 2012 convention. A DNC spokesman declined to comment.

The city ultimately did not make a bid for next year’s event, but city leaders are working to make sure a political convention by either national party, perhaps in 2016, remains a possibility.

“We weren’t in a position to go after that” for 2012, said Jay Burress, CEO of the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We want to be in position to be able to go after that event in the future.”

Since Jerry Jones first starting talking about the Dallas Cowboys moving to Arlington, talk of the big-ticket events the venue might draw included national political conventions.

“In another week and a half, we’ll have hosted a Super Bowl, which puts us in a great position for any event out there at all,” Burress said.

As far as the 2016 conventions go, Burress said anything is possible.

“We would just have to see what the landscape looks like at that time,” Burress said.
