Meet your newest Democratic congressman (and superdelegate)

WE’VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

In a major win by Democrats deep in the south, Don Cazayoux won the Special Election in LA-6, becoming the newest Democrat in Congress, and our 795th Superdelegate!

Also, there are now 4,048 delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, and it takes 2,024.5 delegates to get the nomination.

any idea who he endorses?

BTW did you see the rain man comment in Slate?

Obama won LA-06 by 28 points. I would think Rep. Cazayoux will either endorse Obama or stay quiet.

Yeah, we saw the Rain Man comment in Slate. Our response:

Definitely 2024.5 delegates.
10 minutes to Guam. 10 minutes to Guam.

I think Cazayoux will stay neutral. He will have a very tough re-election in November, and he will need every Democrat in the district. He can’t afford to make anybody mad at him.

Louisiana no longer has an open primary in November for federal offices. So what I’m wondering is whether Rep. Cazayoux has already won the Democratic Primary for the upcoming November election.

The Democratic primary is on September 6, with a runoff on Oct 4, but I can’t imagine he’ll face any competition since he will be the incumbent. It will be interesting to see if the GOP renominates Jenkins or not.

Cazayoux would be foolish to endorse Clinton; not only did his district vote overwhelmingly Obama, but he would not have come close without the African American vote, which he will need in November.

I agree that Cazayoux will likely remain uncommitted. However, he surely must hope that Obama is the nominee in November. Given the fact that his district is about a third African-American, I know that he would benefit from historic turnout levels in November.

Michael Jackson (who barely lost to Cazayoux in the special election primary) has already announced that he will rechallenge him in the fall.

Sorry about the deleted posts, I have the numbers right this time.

Definitely 2024.5? Help me out…

Your counter shows 1738 Obama, 1608 Clinton, 19 Edwards, and 682 uncommitted. That’s only 4047. Where’s the missing delegate?

As noted in another comment thread, those numbers for Obama and Clinton should each be 1/2 a delegate more, but there’s not enough room in the sidebar. But there’s your extra delegate.
