It’s a classic convention bid site battle: In one corner: Mid-west Milwaukee, with the swing-state power, a brand new arena, and the pleasant, no hurricane summer weather, but hotels in the ‘burbs. In the other corner: Big-city Houston – not a swing state yet (sorry), but with hotels galore, and a better place to make an immigration statement. Milwaukee’s opponents seem to be making one last push to bring the convention to Texas:
The tension point is a view among some DNC members that Milwaukee might not be equipped to handle the needs of delegates in terms of hotel rooms in close proximity to the center of the convention action and easy transportation
…
But there’s a significant faction within the ranks — and the leadership — that prefers Houston.
Karen Carter Peterson, a vice chair of the DNC and the chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party, said she has told Perez her primary concern is the experience of the delegates — including getting to hear from top figures at delegation breakfasts, particularly “if we have not settled on a nominee at that point.”
“For example, if I want Doug Jones and Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris and Cory Booker to all come at some point in my three days to one of my breakfasts, those folks are making stops for multiple delegations, so it needs to be convenient for them to move around and hit five or six breakfasts in a two-hour span,” she said. “If the hotels are 15, 25 miles apart, it makes it less likely.”
Wait a minute. Doug Jones. Doug Jones? The Dems are gonna’ need a 3rd debate nite at this point!
I still think Milwaukee is the favorite, 70-30 over Houston.
I would put Doug Jones as a maybe, more likely for VP. on the John Edwards 2004 theory (better chance of winning nationally than getting re-elected). Of course, if race is not settled before convention (unlikely), every potential compromise candidates would be somebody that the delegates might wish to hear from.
Additionally, comments came from the chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party. I could easily see Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Louisiana wanting to hear from Jones about how to build a winning coalition and campaign in a deep red state.
DOUG JONES!?!?!?!? Seriously!?!?!?!? First, he’s too old at 64. I suspect the final candidate will be younger that (yeah I know, Joe Biden and Barack Obama) -He lacks appeal to MANY MANY Democrats outside the south.
He will not be able to grow the coalition.
And Houston in July? If you want the hotels, you pick Miami, not Houston…..
