This day started out bad for Donald Trump. He went to bed with President Obama having gotten under Donald Trump’s skin by calling out Trump’s wanna-be authoritarian tendencies.
And the day has only gotten worse. On the one hand, Divine Providence/Nature has followed through on what everyone thought was possible when the Republicans named Jacksonville as their back-up site for the RNC. This is the current five day forecast for Tropical Depression 13:
While a lot can change in five days (and five day forecasts have a good margin of error), there is a real possibility that the RNC will be dealing with a hurricane striking Florida on Monday when there convention is supposed to start. Hurricanes have been a recurring problem for the Republican Convention multiple times in the past four cycles. Of course, nobody would think to be concerned about a hurricane hitting Florida in late August.
Aside from the weather issues potentially disrupting the Jacksonville during the week that Trump had wanted to hold his coronation renomination in Jacksonville, there is a second depression that is currently forecast to hit Texas or Louisiana on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning (which could cause Tropical Depression 13 to take a more northward turn hitting both Jacksonville and Charlotte).
And to make matters worse, there was a development on that pesky little remand from the U.S. Supreme Court about his taxes and the Manhattan District Attorney. Today, the federal district judge hearing Trump’s request to quash the subpoena has decided that Trump doesn’t have a valid basis to block the disclosure of those records. While those records will be part of a grand jury proceeding (and thus will not be immediately disclosed), the filings by the Manhattan District Attorney about why those records are relevant to a grand jury investigation has to concern Trump about spending his post-presidential years in a New York prison.
And, of course, there is the capper to Trump’s day. Vice President Biden gets to give his acceptance speech tonight. Trump has been struggling to figure out any attack that will really stick to Vice-President Biden in a way that will get just enough swing voters who hate Trump to hold their noses and vote for Trump a second time. Most of his attacks have been borderline ludicrous and depend on Biden’s helping Trump. Tonight, Joe Biden is going to stick a fork in most of them, forcing Trump’s folks to go back to the drawing board a mere four days before the Republican convention (and the last real chance to change voters’ minds about Biden). While I am sure that they will come up with something, I doubt that it will be anything that will survive even the most minimal of fact checking.
All in all, a day to make President Trump wonder why he got out of bed this morning. Of course, the rest of us wouldn’t mind if he just stayed in bed 24-7 and let the handful of remaining adults in his administration run the country.
