A couple of recent stories out of Milwaukee are hinting at possible problems for the front-runner’s bid to host the 2024 Republican National Convention.
First, and not surprisingly, liberal groups are pressuring the city to withdraw its bid:
Five left-leaning community and labor groups on Tuesday called for Milwaukee leaders to reject the 2024 Republican National Convention that Mayor Cavalier Johnson has been working to win.
The push to scuttle the GOP event in a traditionally Democratic city came just a day before a key Common Council committee is due to vote on the contract. The letter prompted Johnson to reiterate his support for the event because of the short- and long-term economic opportunities it presents.
…
The groups claimed “we must not normalize the far right that has captured the Republican Party.”
But then, that committee vote mentioned above was delayed last week:
After a lengthy meeting Wednesday, a key committee of the Milwaukee Common Council delayed a vote on an agreement to bring the 2024 Republican National Convention to the city.
The move came despite a deadline of the end of next week described by Gerard Randall, a Republican Party of Wisconsin vice chairman who is the treasurer of the host committee.
…
But Common Council President José G. Pérez, who chairs the committee, said after the meeting that key unanswered questions on what sorts of benefits the city could gain from the deal prompted the decision to hold. He also said the deadline “was a surprise to us” and that council members had been told there was no specific deadline.
…
The delay came after a nearly two-hour closed-session discussion in which raised voices could occasionally be heard outside the meeting room.
Any Democratic led city is going to have issues with hosting a GOP convention in this day and age. Nashville sits and waits.
