Convention wrapup
Some odds and ends after the Chicago gathering:
- Biden’s “E” logo lived on in the DNC logo
- Content creators had their moments at the DNC
- Covid also had credentials for the convention
- And Chicago may bid for the 2028 convention

Dems to nominate Biden early to avoid GOP Ohio nonsense
We’ve been talking about convention dates for almost 20 years here at DCW, and you have to wonder if this is going to have effects in the future:
The Democratic National Committee announced on Tuesday that it will nominate President Joe Biden through a “virtual roll call” vote ahead of the August convention to ensure he appears on the Ohio ballot this November.
Ohio’s ballot deadline is Aug. 7, two weeks before the DNC planned to hold its official presidential nomination at an in-person convention in Chicago. Frank LaRose, the Republican secretary of state, warned last week that Biden would not be on the state’s ballot unless the state lawmakers moved the ballot access deadline to after the Democratic convention.

Houston out of 2024 Democratic Convention contest
The Democratic National Convention told Houston officials this week the city will not host Democrats’ national convention in 2024.
Mayor Sylvester Turner’s office confirmed Thursday that Houston no longer is in the running. The snub leaves New York City, Chicago and Atlanta vying to host the convention, which Democrats have estimated could bring more than $230 million in economic activity.

GOP and Dem Convention Updates
As we start 2023, here’s the latest on the 2024 Republican and Democratic National Conventions:
- The GOP has announced their 2024 dates for their Milwaukee convention: July 15-18. Two thoughts: First, the Democrats get to go second (as the party in the White House), and will likely schedule to start on Monday Aug 19 or Aug 26. (The 2024 Summer Olympics end on Sun 8/11). Second, any thoughts of moving to 3-day conventions have clearly been put aside.
- Atlanta continues its effort to secure the 2024 Democratic Convention, which would be its first since 1988.
- Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones is supporting Atlanta’s bid.
- Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens makes the case:
- Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot makes the case for her city:

GOP considering choosing 2028 convention site this year
Well, this would be a big change:
On Wednesday, Republican National Committee members unanimously voted to pass a new rule enabling the party to begin selecting its presidential convention sites six years in advance, leaving the door open for party officials to determine both the 2024 and 2028 convention locations this year. After that, the site reveal for the 2032 nominating convention would be made in 2026.“Giving our Site Selection Committee the opportunity to start looking at cities seven years ahead of Convention is a smart business decision that will ensure the best possible event as our delegates select the Republican-nominee for President,” RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement to CNN.
Two years in advance to six years in advance is a big jump. The other main issue? When a party controls the White House (in a first term, at least), where to hold the convention is really a decision for the White House to make, not the national committee. Choosing the convention site 6 years in advance removes a first term president’s team from having any input to the decision. But, it is true that cities fill up their available dates far in the future, and the parties need to remove any obstacles to cities wanting to bid for conventions. It will be very interesting to see how this goes.
Nashville and Milwaukee remain the two finalists to host the 2024 GOP Convention. A decision is expected later this year.
