DNC arrives in Birmingham for #DNC2016 site selection visit

The site selection team for the 2016 Democratic National Convention comes to Birmingham today for a two-day visit to the Magic City.

Birmingham is the first of the remaining five finalist cities that will receive a visit from the team, which will be evaluating the city’s capability of hosting the massive convention.

The committee’s visit agenda has not been disclosed, but there is a public pitch party scheduled for Monday night at Iron City and reportedly a private event at Regions Field. The Birmingham City Council approved $14,000 in spending for the site visit. Signage about the DNC has been added in key locations around the city. – Birmingham Business Journal

What does the #RNC2016 choice of Cleveland mean for #DNC2016?

And so it’s “The Mistake by the Lake”. Ah Cleveland. Now, actually Cleveland has come a long way from the headline after the 1980 Census that said “Will the last one out, please remember to shut the lights?” Cleveland is a sports town, a music town (Hall of Fame not to mention the suburban Polka Hall of Fame) and the site of The Drew Carey Show. In addition to no hurricanes, there won’t be any lake effect snow in the summer. And actually, it’s a pleasant place.

So. Our final selection list is Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, New York (Brooklyn), Philadelphia and Phoenix. You can vote for your choice here. Let us know in the comments for which city you voted.

If I had to guess, I’d say that Cleveland and Columbus were now out of the running, because, well, do we really want two conventions in the same state? I’ve never thought that Phoenix was a great choice since so many people are still boycotting the state due to their illegal harassment immigration policies. Alabama? Really? If we were going to pick a southern state for voter registration reasons, tactically, Georgia and Mississippi make more sense. Then again, neither put in a bid. So that brings us to Philly and Brooklyn.  Continue Reading...

Brooklyn bids for 2016 Democratic National Convention

First they get a basketball team, now they want a convention?

The de Blasio administration on Friday proposed that when the Democratic Party gathers to crown its next presidential nominee, it do so in the mayor’s home borough, a cradle of the resurgent left that has morphed from a symbol of the working class into a gritty, global arbiter of cool.

In a 200-page formal bid, New York City offers up the Barclays Center, the rust-glazed sports and entertainment arena near Brooklyn’s bustling downtown, as the anchor venue for the quadrennial gathering, with accommodations and other events to be spread across the city’s four other boroughs. Taxpayer funding for national political conventions stripped #DNC16 #RNC16

Expect to see leaner conventions from now on…

Congress managed to do its job last week, passing legislation to boost research funding for pediatric disorders and presenting a bill to President Obama that the White House says he’ll sign. The nation should be dancing in the streets (Congress actually accomplished something and for sick children, no less!) but the national party committees are less-than-pleased about the cost.

The Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, which was championed by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, provides $126 million over 10 years to fund research into pediatric autism, cancer, and other diseases. But it’s paid for by taking away taxpayer funding for national political conventions. Continue Reading...

Philly for 2016 Democratic National Convention? #DNC2016

U.S. Rep. Bob Brady has his answer. Tomorrow, the city’s Democratic Party chairman will make his case for a convention bid to political, tourism and labor leaders from the region.

To do so, Brady is bringing to Philly the team that produced the 2012 convention in Charlotte, N.C. They will explain the complicated process of winning the bid.

For Brady, it will be a trip through what might have been. Continue Reading...

Columbus in 2016?

It’s never too early to talk about the next national convention locations. We just got a tweet from the Chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, Chris Redfern, with this little nugget:

The City of Columbus expects to be a serious player in the competition for a political convention four years from now.

City leaders will begin exploring the possibilities in a meeting next month with representatives of both political parties.   Continue Reading...

Indianapolis and Newark looking at 2016 conventions

Never too early to start making noise about 2016. First Indianapolis:

Cory Booker anyone?

A northern New Jersey congressman is trying to rally support for New Jersey to host the Democratic National Convention in 2016.
