A New Plea for #DNCPHL2016 Volunteers

dnc2016Matt wrote a few months ago about the Convention looking to fill 3,000 volunteer slots. This made sense – close to 5,000 delegates, plus spouses and friends, members of the campaigns, media, protesters, various groups with their programs, rallies and functions. Volunteers provide important input: not just at the Convention helping people navigate between the venues but also ahead of time getting things set up.

But now, it appears that there is a call for 10,000 volunteers. Color me confused. You can see the video here. Ever since I saw this, I’ve been scratching my head about where to even put 10,000 volunteers, not to mention what they would do.

DNC venuesThe major areas in Philly where the convention will be held are in Center City and the arena. No one is walking between the two venues, since it’s about 4 miles, and there’s no guidance yet about transportation off SEPTA. SEPTA runs a train every 8 minutes and buses every half hour. It’s possible that the bus frequency would increase and volunteer ambassadors would be needed at the stations. In addition, the delegations will likely have buses between the two locations. But at the stadium area, there isn’t much besides the stadium, and other stadiums. So, that’s a limited number of necessary volunteers. Continue Reading...

Let’s Talk Super Delegates

Back in 2008, DCW published everything daily we could find on the Super Delegates. This year, it’s a little different since Hillary Clinton received many commitments prior to the voting beginning. It’s important to remember that “Super Delegate” is a media term, it refers to party regulars who are allowed a vote at the convention. The full list of 712 people include:

  • President and Vice President (if they are Democrats)
  • Democratic House and Senate members
  • Democratic governors
  • Former Democratic presidents and vice presidents
  • Former Democratic leaders of the U.S. Senate
  • Former Democratic speakers of the House and Democratic minority leaders
  • Former chairs of the Democratic National Committee
  • Certain State Democratic leaders

The remaining 4,051 delegates are selected either through the caucus process, or directly elected via primaries. 2,382 delegate votes are required to turn a candidate into the party’s nominee. Already, over 400 delegates have committed to Hillary Clinton. It’s expected that today the Congressional Black Caucus will endorse her also. There is a split in the Progressive Caucus with most endorsing Clinton. Remember, though, as we at DCW learned in 2008, the pledges and endorsements can change over the course of the campaign.

So when you see numbers of delegates coming out of primaries and caucuses, they often include the number of Supers. For example, in New Hampshire, Bernie Sanders won 15 delegates in the voting, Hillary won 9. However, she has six committed Super Delegates, and there are two uncommitted at this writing. Super Bowl matches cities which hosted 2 previous Democratic Conventions

And then there’s always Dave Mason’s song, “Please come to Boston“, which includes the 3 cities which hosted Democratic Conventions from 2000-2008.

Cruz wins by 1 vote

1 delegate, that is. Initial projections:

Cruz: 8
Trump: 7
Rubio: 7
Carson: 3
Paul:  1 ?
Kasich: 1?

(Politico has it as 8/7/6/2/1 – 24 allocated) Continue Reading...

Iowa Math

While vote totals are not irrelevant to presidential elections (especially in the primary phase when trailing candidates quickly find that they lack the financial resources to continue), what ultimately matters is not the popular vote, but winning delegates (for the primaries) and electors (for the general).  The delegate math heading into the Iowa Caucuses are different for the two parties for two reasons:  1) the stage at which delegates are bound and 2) the two parties do proportional representation differently.

Dems need 3000 more volunteers for Philadelphia convention

7000 down, 3000 to go:

The Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee, or PHLDNC, needs about 10,000 volunteers for the four-day event, executive director Kevin Washo said Wednesday during Visit Philadelphia’s New Year’s breakfast. That’s about the same amount required for Pope Francis’ visit last September.

About 7,000 people have already registered to volunteer, Washo said. Continue Reading...

#PHLDNC2016 Hotel Assignments

If you’re coming to Philadelphia for July’s convention, you’ll need a place to stay. After the jump is the official hotel list indicating which state delegations are staying in which hotels. While many delegations are staying in Philly proper, a large group will be out in the King of Prussia/Valley Forge area (20 miles outside town), and others in Bucks County (40 miles).

The out-of-town venues are much closer than those that were outside Charlotte in 2012. And there are both buses and the Regional Rail for those visitors who won’t be with the delegations. (They tend to have buses/vans and travel as a group).

Clinton holds huge superdelegate lead

If anybody is wondering why we’re not obsessing about superdelegates this cycle, here’s why:

The Associated Press contacted all 712 superdelegates in the past two weeks, and heard back from more than 80 percent. They were asked which candidate they plan to support at the convention next summer.

The results: Continue Reading...
